NATIONAL
PARK
Last
remaining home of the Asiatic lion, this park in Gujarat is a 11,412 sq
km hilly tract of mixed dry deciduous and teak forests in terspersed
with grasslands. It is also one of the parks where one can spot leopards.
Besides these chital, sambar, nilgai, chausingha,
grey langur, hyena,
painted sandgrouse, peacocks and paradise flycatchers may be spotted on
an early morning drive. The Kamleshwar dam reservoir is habitat to the
densest mugger crocodile population in India, besides water birds. The
Maldharis, traditional buffalo herders, co-exist in the park with the
lions. For those with limited time, this is the best area to drive
through to see maximum wildlife including the blackbuck, chinkara,
wild boar, jackal and the magnificent lion.

Park
entrance at Sasan. Drive from Ahmedabad takes 8-9 hours on
National Highway 8A Rajkot Road (8B after Bamanbore). From Rajkot
the route is via Gondal and Jetpur to Junagarh from where road
turns off to Sasan-Gir. The nearest town is Veraval 45 and
Junagarh 60 km. There is an overnight train from Ahmedabad to
Sasan-Gir on metre gauge but it is slow. Faster is the broad-gauge
train to Junagarh, 1 hour by bus/taxi from Gir. Nearest airport is
Ahmedabad, 408 km away. |

from October to November depending on the rain, to mid-June. Best
time December to March, or till May, if you can bear the heat.
