WILDLIFE

India boasts of a vast and varied wildlife. Over 90,000 sq. km. of protected wilderness, consisting of as many as 53 national parks and almost 250 sanctuaries that makes them the home of over 350 mammals and 1,200 bird species, many of which are unique to the Indian sub-continent. Once famous for its white tiger, the royal Bengal tiger, the snow leopard, the Asiatic lion and the great Indian bustard, Indian wildlife is among the most varied in the world.

Most national parks and sanctuaries are easily accessible from major Indian metro cities. Whichever part of the country you may be in, you are never really far away from a wildlife reserve. From Delhi in the north you have close getaways to Corbett National Park (named after Jim Corbett for its wild elephants, variety of deer and rich bird life); to Bharatpur, where you can view over 120 species of birds including the famed Siberian crane; Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan with a large population of tiger, deer and leopards, In central India, you have the Kanha National Park, which is amongst the finest reserves in Asia. In the west, the wild ass lives in the little Rann of Kutch and the Asiatic lion can be seen at the Gir National Park. In the east you have  the one horned Rhino reserve at Kaziranga and the mangrove swamps at Sundarbans. In the south, excellent sanctuaries, famous for wild elephants, can be visited at Periyar, Bandipur and Mudumalai.
