DUDHWA
NATIONAL
PARK
On
the Nepalese border in Uttar Pradesh, this tiger reserve covers 811 km
of alluvial land near the Himalayan foothills. It has sal forests and
swampy depressions filled with water almost throughout the year. The
park is known for its population of bara singha or swamp
deer,
endangered due to heavy biotic pressures on the park. Chital, hog
deer,
barking deer, sambar, wild boar, jackal, rhesus
macaque, grey langur and
monitor lizard can be seen here with ease. A major rhino rehabilitation
project was started here in 1984, making one of the few places, outside
Assam, where visitors can see the one-horned rhino. Birdlife is
prolific, with over 400 species, including owls, storks, hornbills,
kingfishers, woodpeckers.
