INDIRA GANDHI
(ANAMALAIS)
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

This Tamil Nadu sanctuary was earlier, and is still, better known as the Anamalais Wildlife Sanctuary. It has a diverse topography, varying from evergreen forests to temperate grasslands. A fine sanctuary with good tourist infrastructure and as many endangered species seek refuge here so they can be viewed with ease.  These are the lion-tailed macaque, nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, common langur, Malabar giant squirrel, elephant, gaur spotted deer, wild boar, barking deer, wild dog and sambar. Several of these graze on the grass around rest houses at Topslip, providing wonderful moonlight views at close quarters.  Trekking possible with permission and the nilgiri tahr is seen on the upland meadows.  Birdlife is diverse, with hornbill, racket-tailed drongo, fairy bluebird and malkoha being attractions. Elephant rides and experienced guides are available.
