THEKKADY-PERIYAR
Thekkady, 253 kms from Thiruvananthapuram and 190 kms from Kochi, is the home of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Centred around an artificial lake, the sanctuary is about 800 sq. km. Earlier known as Nellikampatty Sanctuary and established in 1934, the sanctuary was enlarged in 1950 as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. A boat ride on the splendid Periyar lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. The greatest attraction here is the herds of wild elephants that come down to lake to frolic in the waters. Tiger, Sambar, Bison, Spotted Deer, Leopard, Malabar Flying Squirrel, Stripe-necked Mongoose and so on can also be spotted in the forest.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, One of the largest wildlife reserves in India, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is more popular as a tiger reserve. The evergreen forests are an excellent natural habitat for elephants, the gaurs or bisons, sambhars, barking deer and mouse deer. Periyar is also a botanist's and an ornithologist's dream.
