MOUNT
ABU
At
1,219 metres, Mount Abu is the highest point of the Aravali range passing
through Rajasthan. The only hill resort of Rajasthan, it is built around a lake
and is surrounded by forested hills.
According
to a legend, the place derives its name from Arbuda, a serpent who descended to
the spot to rescue Shiva's bull, Nandi. Besides having all the features of a
pleasant hill resort, Mount Abu is also well known for the famous Dilwara
temples and many more archaeological remains, interesting treks and picnic
spots, the romantic royal retreats of the various erstwhile families of bygone
Rajputana and some relics of the Raj period.

Dilwara
Jain Temples,
These were built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Vimal
Vasahi is the oldest of the temples, built in 1031 A.D.,
constructed of white marble. Photography

Nakki
Lake,
Nowhere else in India except in the Himalayas does a lake
exist at 1,219 metres above sea level. The Lake is studded with
little islands. Boats are available.
Gaumukh
Temple,
A natural spring flowing though a sculpted cow's head gives
the shrine its name. The famous 'yagna' of Sage
Vashishtha was performed here. A beautifully sculpted hill
temple of Arbuada - the mighty serpent, stands against the
beautiful backdrop. Nearby is the magnificent marble image of
Nandi, the celestial bull rescued by Arbuada.
Adhar
Devi Temple,
A beautiful temple carved out of a huge rock. A climb of 200
steps leads to the temple.
Shri
Raghunathji Temples,
Situated near Nakki Lake, it is believed that the famous Hindu
preacher, Shri Ramanand placed the image of Shri Raghunathji
(Lord Ram) on this site in the 14th century.
Sunset
Point,
Spectacular sight of the setting sun when the hills are covered
in the golden glow can be viewed from here.
Trevor's
Tank,
(5 km) Named after the British engineer who constructed it,
Trevor's Tank is a delight for birdwatchers with densely wooded
hills that are a heaven to pigeons, peacocks and partridges.
Achalgarh,
(8 km) An impressive fort with some beautiful Jain temples
enclosed within. Among the noteworthy temples are Achaleswar
Mahadev Temple (1412 A.D.) and Kantinath Jain Temple (1513 A.D.)
The latter has a gold plated image. Mandakini Kund and a
sculpture of Parmar Dharavarsh are situated close to the
Achaleswar Mahadev Temple. The fort was built in the 14th
century A.D. by Rana Kumbha and is approached by a motorable
road.
Guru
Shikhar,
15 km, the highest peak in the Aravallis (1,722 metres above the
sea level) allows a bird's eye view of the sylvan surroundings
on the shikhar are worth a visit.
Curious
in marble, sandawood and sandstone can be brought from the shops around Nikki
Lake. Kota sarees, bangles and linen with sanganeri
prints are also available.
