JODHPUR
Located on the edge of
the Thar Desert, Once the capital of the Marwar state, it was founded in 1459 by Rao
Jodha and is now the second largest city of Rajasthan. It is still a marvelously medieval city. While
the graceful palaces, forts and temples bring alive the historic grandeur,
exquisite handicrafts, folk dances, music and the brightly attired people
lend a romantic aura to the city.

Mehrangarh
Fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 when he shifted his capital
here from nearby Mandore. There are palaces housed within this daunting
structure, among them are Moti Mahal and Phool Mahal.
Jaswant
Thada,
A cluster of royal cenotaphs in white marble built in 1899 A.D. in memory of
Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Within the main cenotaph are the portraits of various
Jodhpur rulers.
Umaid
Bhawan Palace, While Mehrangarh dominates Jodhpur, it is Umaid Bhawan
Palace that holds one in awe. It is also known as Chhittar Palace because of the
particular type of sandstone used to built it - which does not decay in the
rains. Portions of the palace have been converted into a hotel and a museum.
Osian,
(65 Km) Caravans passing through the desert from Amerkote and Jaisalmer in
ancient times would stop here, making it an important trading centre. Osian was
also a centre of Jain learning. Today, the sixteen ruined temples both Jain and
Brahmanical, are its chief attraction. These temples date back to the eighth and
eleventh centuries,. The most important temples are Sachhiyamata Temple and Jain
Temples which are well preserved.
Mandore,
(9 km) from the city was once the capital of ancient Marwar and now hosts the
cenotaphs built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh and Maharaja Ajit Singh.
Crowned with soaring spires, these are embelished with sculptured reliefs
reflecting the glories of ancient Marwar. Its Hall of Heroes depicting popular
Hindu and folk deities is worth a visit. The 16 figures here are carved out of
one single rock.
Khimsar,
(92 km) On the Jodhpur-Nagaur-Bikaner highway, Khimsar is where Aurangzeb is
reported to have stayed when he ordered his armies to invade Jodhpur.
Mahamandir,
(9 km) Built in 1812 A.D. it is a noteworthy temple with 84 carved pillars.

(135 km) An imposing fort with beautiful murals. It is also the
venue for a week long cattle fair held in January/February every
year.
Marvar
Festival - A two-day extravaganza
rejoicing in the glory of the desert
kingdom, the Marwar festival is a celebration from classical and folk music
concerts at dusk., form puppet shows to turban typing contests. Steeped in
tradition, it is adventurous - camel polo can be a surprisingly fast game! Timed
with the full moon the celebration end with a fabulous fire-dance on the sand
dunes of Osian.
Ramdeoji Cattle Fair at
Nagaur -135 km from Jodhpur, is one of the best cattle fairs in the
sub-continent. Thousands of people bring camels, bullocks and horses for sale.
Camel races and other sports are organised.
Jodhpur is a
veritable shopper's paradise with entire streets and localities in the walled
city devoted to diverse commodities. The city is famous for bandhani and
lahariya (tie and dye textiles) and block printed textiles,
available in studpendous range.
