DELHI
Around the capital city of Delhi are the remains of seven earlier cities that go back three thousand years. Ancient ruins in their landscaped gardens, imposing fortesses, palaces and  onion-domed mosques merge harmoniously into the modern city, making it an exciting travel experience.

GETTING THERE

Delhi has two main airport terminals about 4.5 km apart. Terminal-I is the domestic (Palam) airport and Terminal-II is the Indira Gandhi International Airport. International airport is 20 km from the city centre. Delhi is well connected with major cities in India by Indian Airlines. Other private Airlines like Jet Airways, Air Sahara also connect Delhi with Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore etc.

Delhi is the headquarters of the Northern Railway and is the most well connected railhead both on broad gauge (New Delhi) and meter gauge (Delhi Main) railway line with all of the major places in India.

SIGHTSEEING

Red Fort, From Mughal India, the chief attraction is the huge fort that contains within it palaces and impressive public buildings, such as the Diwan-i-Am (hall for private audience), Rang Mahal (a water-cooled apartment of royal ladies), Pearl Mosque built of white marble and Lahore Gate the fort's main gate.

Purana Qila, Earlier seat of the Mughals, believed to be the site of Indraprastha of the Mahabharata period, is a fort built by Sher Shah.

Humayun's Tomb, A sandstone forerunner of the Taj Mahal built by Humayun's widow. At nearby Nizamuddin are the tombs of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, Jahanara and Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.

Jama Masjid, In old Delhi, an architectural extravaganza of Shah Jehan. One of the largest mosques, a handsome structure that is still used for house of worship for Muslims.

India Gate, In the centre of the city is a memorial raised in honour of Indian troops who laid down their lives during the Afghan War.

Rastrapati Bhawan, Once the imperial residence of British viceroys, now residence of the president of India.

Qutab Minar, Built by Qutub-ud-Din Aibek in 1199, an 11th century victory tower that rises to a height of 73 metres.

Lotus Temple, The Bahai Temple, an exquisitely beautiful marble building in the form of a blossoming lotus, surrounded by acres of gardens.

Jantar Mantar, In the heart of the city is a stone astronomical observatory commissioned by the builder of Jaipur, Swai Jai Singh.

Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi was cremated here in 1948. The sprawling site on the banks of the Yamuna is marked by a brick platform flanked by an eternal flame, surrounded by lush green lawns and imposing boundary walls of concrete.

EXCURSIONS

Neemrana, is a small hamlet just 120 km from Delhi. Neemrana Fort is a 14th century fort, which was the capital of one of the descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan . The beautifully restored fort is built in the hillside commanding spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Just off the Jaipur-Delhi highway closer to Delhi, Neemrana is just 100 km from the international airport.

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, is a village outside Delhi in the neighbouring state of Haryana. Only 46 km from Delhi off the Delhi - Jaipur highway, 2 km from the Sultanpur Sanctuary and Lake.

SOUND & LIGHT SHOW

It is held the year round, except during the monsoon (August). SON-ET-LUMIERE, a dramatic inter- play of sound and light effects, recreating the history of Red Fort, a symbol of Mughal Power. In this setting, three hundred years of history come alive.

FAIRS & FESTIVALS

Kite-Flying Festival, held in Makar Sankranti day (January) on the green lawns above Palika Bazar, Connaught Place, this colourful extravaganza attracts national as well as international participants.

Garden Tourism Festival, held at the Talkatora Garden in February every year, it is based on particular themes.

International Mango Festivals, held during July, it draws people from the country as well as businessmen, both from home and abroad.

Qutab Festival, organized in November, it gives tourists to five them a glimpse of the cultural grandeur of India. Set amidst the historical background of the Qutab, cultural events are held where veterans of Indian classical music and dance and folk musicians give spectacular performances.

SAMADHIS

Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi was cremated here in 1948. The sprawling site on the banks of the Yamuna is marked by a brick platform flanked by an eternal flame, surrounded by lush green lawns and imposing boundary walls of concrete.

Shanti Vana, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated here in 1964. Adjacent to Raj Ghat, it is flanked by lown s and foliage of many variety.

Vijay Ghat, Nehru's successor, Lal Bahadur Shastri, was cremated here.

Shakti Sthal, The daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Mrs Indira Gandhi, and his grandson Sanjay Gandhi were cremated here. 

Vir Bhumi, Rajiv Gandhi, elder son of Mrs Indira Gandhi, who was Prime Minister after his mother's assassination, was cremated here.

Amar Jyoti, The eternal flame was lit after the 1971 Indo-Pak war under the arch of India Gate. Homage is paid by the Prime Minister to the  "unknown soldier" before the annual Republic Day march past.

DELHI GOLF CLUB - This has two courses, of 9 and 18 holes. Open all days 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. For foreigner charges are USD 35 on weekdays and USD 40 for weekends.

NOIDA GOLF CLUB - 18 hole course. Open all days 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. For foreigner charges are USD 25. (CLOSED ON TUESDAYS).
